Distillery is a very important Sector in Our Industry..
In India, we have mainly Two Types of Distilleries : One is Molasses Based (Molasses is a waste by-product from sugar Industry) and the other is Grain Based to produce Alcohol.------------------------------
Alcohol has placed for itself a very important place in Our Economy.
It is used as a raw material for number of organic chemicals as a potential fuel in the form of power alcohol when blended with petrol and as an ingredient in beverages..

It is also a source of revenue by way of Excise Duty levied by the State Government on Alcohol Liquors.

It has a potential as fuel in the form of power alcohol for blending with petrol in the ratio of 20:80.
The trend is increasing as the blending increases

Now many major units are engaged in the manufacture of chemicals. So, alcohol-based industry is a very important constituent of the organic chemical sector and the entire Indian chemicals industry in general.
The above substantial consumption of Ethanol by this sector makes it Second largest consumer of Ethanol in the country, behind the potable sector------------------------------

In India, Total requirement of ENA / IMFL / Ethanol is 600 crores litres - out of this 25% ENA from Grain and 75 % from Molasses and 350 Crore Litres for Ethanol as Fuel per annum, whereas, in India, total production of ENA from molasses and grain is 148 crores litres per annum.

Post 2018, the country will require 6.30 Billion litres of Alcohol mainly from molasses for the use in petrol
by the oil companies. As a result of this the huge demand, ENA made out of grain will also arise.

Global scenario and India's Opportunity to export : :After U.S,, Brazil is the second largest producer of ethanol globally . While U.S. produces ethanol from corn, Brazil manufactures ethanol from sugarcane. Brazil has mandatory blending ratio of ethanol in gasoline ranging from 18% to 25%. The blend rate was as high a 25% before September 2011 and was reduced to 20% due to drop in cane output hence affecting the ethanol production. Currently, flex-fuel cars, which can use either ethanol or blended gasoline, in Brazil account for about 53% of the total car fleet and around 90% of the new vehicles’ sales. The proportion of the flex-fuel cars are expected to cross 80% by 2020. Currently, the Brazilian light vehicle fleet has been increasing by 6.7% y-o-y since 2003 with currently 90% of the new vehicles being flex-fuel cars. Thus, there exists an increasing demand in Brazil for ethanol which is encouraging for the sugarcane industry.
Huge Consummation of Molasses Based alcohol also will give rise a huge demand of Indian made grain based Alcohol in the national and international market.

Molasses Based : As the demand of Alcohol is increasing day by day as depicted above, almost all the Sugar Plant when going for expansion or New Sugar Plant, are going for the Distillery along with Expansion or New Sugar Plant / Expansion of Existing Distillery.------------------------------
Beginning in January 2003, Government of India mandated the use of 5 % ethanol blend in gasoline through its ambitious Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program.
All Sugar factories having a capacity of 2500 TCD and above, having no Distillery and Co-Generation at present should install Distilleries of suitable capacities in their sugar complexes and to start Co-Generation too.

Since Alcohol produced from Molasses being consumed in huge quantity in some particular sectors, the Grain Based Distillery is also coming up in good Numbers to fulfill the demand of Alcohol in other sectors, whereMolasses Based Alcohol is not mandatory.
